Abstract

Objective : To compare between pulsed dye laser, electrocautery, andpodophyllin resin in the treatment of genital warts.Methods : Ninety patients with venereal warts were included in the studyand were randomly classified into three groups. Group I : 30 patients weretreated with podophyllin resin 25% in tincture of benzoin. Group П : 30patients were treated with electrocautery under local anaesthesia. Group Ш :30 patients were treated with pulsed dye laser. Patients were followed-up for6 months after completion of the course of treatment.Results : In podophyllin group, the success rate was 40%, and four (13.3%)patients had erythema, tenderness, and ulceration. While in electrocauterygroup, the success rate was 70% and five patients complained of scarring (16.7%) during treatment. The success rate was 78.6% in laser group andthree patients complained of transient hypopigmentation ( 10.7%).Conclusion : The pulsed dye laser has been found to be superior topodophyllin and electrocautery regarding the success rate and the postsession complications.
