Abstract

Premature menopause is defined as the occurrence of menopause before the age of 40 years, characterized by amenorrhea hypoestrogenism and elevated serum gonadotrophin levels, It occurs in about. 1-3% women. No definite cause can be detected but the causes may be considered genetic, autoimmune, chromosomal abnormalities and after treatment of cancers by radiotherapy or chemotherapy or after removal of the ovaries. Women with premature menopause can get spontaneous pregnancy in about 5-10%. Recently the I.V.F (In-vitro fertilization) with egg-donation is the only successful way to achieve pregnancy. In the near future, cryopreservation of ovarian tissues can offer some hope to females with premature menopause.
