Abstract
This study was done to demonstrate the injurious effect of intense light on the retina. It was conducted on 72 adult both male and female albino rats. They received intense illumination from a fluorescent bulb daily from 8 am to 3 pm. for 2 days, 14 days and 30 days. 2 rats were allowed to recover from each exposure duration. Other group of rats were received oral Ginkgo biloba extract (natural antioxidant) and exposed for the same durations. The animals were sacrificed and specimens were processed for light microscopy, electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. It was found that degeneration of the RPE cells and accumulation of phagosomes in their cytoplasm. Degeneration and disappearance of microvilli. The OS of photoreceptors were completely broken and finally disappeared. IS showed densification of the cytoplasm and degeneration of mitochondria. ONL showed pyknosis and karyolysis. Degenerative changes in OPL as well. Marked improvement in ultrastructure of the retina was obtained after Ginkgo treatment. Immunohistochemical study revealed upgrading of Muller’s cell to GFAP and disappeared after Ginkgo treatment suggesting that Muller cell doesn’t up regulate GFAP after treatment.
