Abstract

The present study included 150 patients who, were divided into three groups: group I included 35 patients with acute diarrhea, group II 40 patients with chronic diarrhea and group III 75 patients with malnutrition. In developing countries the clinical picture of CD is often typical, characterized by chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, stunting and increased mortality especially in younger children. All patients were subjected to full history taking, thorough clinical examination, biochemical routine investigations and tested serologically for CD.CD serological markers included IgA class tTG and EMA, tTG-IgG was determined on sera showing tTG-IgA less than or equal to 0.5 AU together with total serum IgA in patients having tTG-IgG higher than 26 AU. Small bowel upper endoscopic biopsy was done and exam-ined histologically, for sero-positive cases to confirm diagnosis. The prevalence of CD in this study was more than 7%, affecting 10% of cases with chronic diarrhea, 5.7% of cases with acute diarrhea and 6.6% with malnutrition and FTT.CD is not a rare condition in Egypt as previously thought.
