Abstract

Obesity is a major health problem and constitutes a part of insulin resistance syndrome, which includes also hypertension, dyslipidemia and impaired glucose tolerance. Fasting glucose/insulin ratio is the most sensitive marker for insulin resistance. Sialic acid is a marker of atherosclerosis & cardiovascular diseases, while Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is marker of endothelial dysfunction. Both sialic acid and PAI-1 show marked rise in blood of obese subjects especially with abdominal obesity.
