Abstract

The study was conducted over 30 eyes subjected to vitrectomy with four ports using Chandlier system for illumination during bimanual dissection in most of the cases, with peripheral cryoablation and injection of gas mixture of sulphur hexaflouride. We operated on 30 eyes of 29 patients. There were 13 males (43.33%) and 17 females (56.67%). The duration of diagnosed diabetes ranged from 4 to 25 years with a mean of 14.6 + years. Twenty cases (66.67%) where insulin dependent diabetics and the remainder on oral hypoglycemics. More than 20 cases where out of diabetic control inspite of taking treatment. Twenty cases (66.67%) of eyes had laser treatment of the retina prior to presentation. In this study we describe a modification of en bloc technique in which we used perflurocarbon liquid (PFCL) as a dissection tool between the retina and the post hyaloid. After performing an opening in the posterior hyaloid we inject PFCL into the subhyaloid space. The use of perflurocarhon liquid as an accessory dissecting tool helps to refine surgery and minimize complications. The augmentation of PRP with peripheral retinal cryoablation decreases the incidence of postvitrectomy bleeding and help in the stabilization of surgical results.
