Abstract

Since the 1950s, pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has evolved from a high-risk technology with a fifty percent mortality to a safe and effective procedure performed at many hospitals throughout the world. The extracorporeal circulation consists of oxygenators, pumps, tubings, filters and prime solutions.Circulatory assist devices play a crucial role in supporting the pediatric patients. The most commonly used circulatory assist devices are the extracorporeal membrane oxygenators. Ventricular assist devices and the intraaortic balloon pump.
