This study was designed to assess the role of low dose intrathecal sufentanil(in 2 doses) combined with a low dose of isobaric bupivacaine and to compared it with a low dose intrathecal morphine combined with a low dose of isobaric bupivacaine after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Since postoperative pain in such procedure although less than a conventional open technique may be significant particularly during the first 12 hours. The duration of action of each drug, effect on pain scores, haemo-dynamics, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, stress response and side effects were assessed.Morphine with local anaesthetic produced analgesia for 7-12 hours postoperatively with no incidence of respiratory depression.Sufentanil in 10 and 20 µg with local anaesthetic produced analgesia up to 4 hours postoperatively with more dense block with 20µg but with higher incidence of side effects.
