Abstract

Serum Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen (SCC-Ag) by ELISAtechnique and Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) by IRMA technique weremeasured in 65 patients with hepatic focal lesion. 49 patients sufferedfrom proved hepatocellular carcinoma and 16 patients were havingcirrhosis & 20 normal controls. Median levels of serum AFP and SCC-Agin HCC patients was significantly higher when compared with bothcirrhotic patients and controls. On using receiver operator characteristiccurve to improve sensitivity and specificity of AFP and SCC-Ag fordetection of HCC, the best chosen cut-off values were 40 IU/mL for AFPand 2.55ng/L for SCC-Ag, these yielded a sensitivity of 67.2% and61.2% respectively and specificity 100%.The diagnostic sensitivity of them increased to 87.7% when they wascombiendly calculated. It was found that the combined use of AFP andSCC-Ag is useful in screening patients with hepatic focal lesion toincrease the chance of early diagnosis of HCC patients.
