Abstract

The high and rising cost of health care led hospital administrators to try to decrease the inappropriate use that occurs because of unnecessary admissions and prolonged length of stay because reducing the time that patients spent in hospitals is seen as one way of controlling health care costs (Kalant et al., 2000).The present study is concerned with the assessment of inappropriate admissions and inappropriate hospital days of care using the (AEP) and to determine the possible causes of such inappropriate utilization at Cairo University Hospital Surgical departments. This study was cross sectional study conducted in general surgical departments of Cairo University Surgical Hospital. A convenient sample of 350 patients was included in the study from four surgical departments in added to the ICU departments.The most important results revealed that:A-The inappropriate admissions constituted 1.1% of admissions among the study group. All urgent cases were appropriately admitted while 98.4% of elective cases were appropriately admitted.A-The inappropriate days of care constituted 43.7%.The most important recommendations were: 1-Further in-depth studies to be conducted in different hospital departments to investigate other possible causes for inappropriate admissions and subsequent days of care.2-In each hospital a committee should be present which is responsible for assessment and evaluation of appropriateness of patients’ admissions in different departments as well as their days of care.
