Abstract

The relationship between smoking and COPD has been well – documented. We investigated the impact of shisha smoking on airway Inflammation in COPD patients. Changes in cell profile in sputum samples from smokers with COPD were studied. Patients who cased smoking and asymptomatic smokers were computed. Setting :- Imbabba Chest Hospital. We collected from 19 smokers and 19 ex-smokers with COPD and 10 asymptomatic smokers. We examined sputum samples for total and differential leucocytic counts. Total leucocytic count was significantly increased in smoker Group in comparison to ex-smoker and asymptomatic-smokers. Neutrophils percentage was increased in ex-smoker Group (70 + or - 1.4) compared to smoker one (63.6) where asymptomatic smoker showed (59.1). In asymptomatic-smokers, macrophage percentage was significantly higher than smoker and ex-smoker groups. This study concluded that there is persistence of airway inflammation in copy after one year of smoking cessation 1.e. there was ongoing of airway inflammation on coughing with smoking cessation.
