Abstract

The present work constitutes a study on a total of 88 cases presenting with symptoms that might be suggestive of intestinal giardiasis as abdominal pain, abdominal distension and diarrhoea. All faecal samples were examined using the direct wet smear and the formol-ether concentration techniques. Among 88 patients, 40 cases were positive for Giardia, 36 cases were negative for Giardia but were positive for other parasites (E.coli, Blastocystis hominis and H.nana eggs) and 12 cases were negative for Giardia and/or other parasites. Giardia coproantigen was detected using the Ridascreen kit in faecal samples of 53 patients. A total of 61 cases were diagnosed positive for Giardia by nested PCR.
