Abstract

This Thesis was based on early management of 2nd and 3rd degree hand burn by early excision and skin grafting. The study involved 20 patients and 28 hands with age ranging 6 – 45 years old (average 27.35 years old).In all patients the skin excision and grafting was done during the first and second week burn. The graft take was evaluated on two consequent days, at the first dressing after 3 days and on the 10th day.In 14 cases there was complete take of the graft. Five hands there was incomplete graft take. One patient needed excision and re-grafting. No tourniquet paralysis was encountered. In conclusion, although long term results regards hand function and aesthetics are comparable with both techniques of early excision and grafting and conservative treatment, it was found in this study several advantages of early excision including shorter recovery time, shorter hospital stay, avoidance of burn wound infection and earlier patient rehabilitation and return to normal activity.
