Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare between theusage of interbody fusion cages alone and with the addition ofanterior cervical plate fixation in the management of multiplelevel cervical degenerative disc disease as regards clinicaloutcome, fusion rate and incidence of complications. 33 patientswere divided into 2 groups, group A consisted of 19 patients whounderwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion usinginterbody fusion cages while group B underwent the sameprocedure with the addition of fixation by anterior cervical plate. The study showed that the use of anterior cervical plate hasimproved the fusion rate and lowered the rate of cage subsidenceat 1 year follow-up but the rate of complications, operative time, cost and hospital stay were significantly higher in plated patientsthan in patients managed by interbody fusion cages alone.
