BackgroundFifty to ninety percent of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting duringtheir first trimester.ObjectivesAssessment of the effectiveness of ginger in treatment of nausea and vomiting ofearly pregnancy.MethodologyA prospective single blind randomized controlled trial which done in primary healthcare unit in Mainsheat El Bakary in Giza Governorate Egypt, among100 pregnantwomen with nausea and vomiting (mild and moderate cases) of pregnancy between 6and 10 weeks of gestation, divided into two groups 50 patient took ginger (200mgthree times a day) and the other 50 took placebo three times a day for three weeks,Symptoms were evaluated before and three weeks after the treatment by Rhodes indexscore, blood pressure, heart burn and arrhythmia were evaluated every week as a sideeffects.ResultsThe change in score of nausea and vomiting of the ginger and placebo beforetreatment which was 10.32 ± 3.73 and 9.38 ± 2.42 respectively, while after treatmentit became 2.84 ± 2.55 and 7.88 ± 3.15 respectively; so the improvement in gingerscore of nausea and vomiting was about 73% while in placebo score of nausea andvomiting was 15% which was significant improvement in ginger group.Side effects which appear in ginger side only; heart burn appears in the second week14%; it was insignificant value and 38% in third week; it was significant value,Arrhythmia appears only in the third week 8%; which was insignificant value.ConclusionGinger is an effective and inexpensive solution for treating nausea and vomiting ofpregnancy and should be considered as a first-line option for management of nauseaand vomiting of pregnancy, or as adjuvant with other forms of therapy.
