Abstract

Healthcare workers are at risk for tuberculosis exposureand infection when they care for patients. Although effectiveinfection-control measures can greatly decrease the risk ofnosocomial tuberculosis infection, the risk of tuberculosisexposure and infection among health-care workers will alwaysbe present to some extent. Therefore, screening workers forlatent tuberculosis infection, using the Mantoux test, remains anintegral part of tuberculosis control programs for health-carefacilities. Tuberculin skin testing programs serve two importantpurposes: to monitor tuberculosis acquisition among health-careworkers, and to identify workers with latent tuberculosisinfection who need treatment. This study was designed to assess the prevalence of latenttuberculosis infection (LTBI) in Fayoum University TeachingHospital. It aims at determining the occupational risk ofMycobacterium tuberculosis infection among a group of 100healthcare workers. The study showed that 32 (32%) havetuberculin skin test positive, 17 of them had radiologicalchanges, 12 of them presented with increased bronchovascularmarkings and 5 with bilateral central calcified lymph nodes. In conclusion, there is risk of tuberculosis transmission amonghealthcare workers at Fayoum University Teaching Hospital, mainly in internal medicine ward and the risk increase by longduration of work and by advanced age and those living in ruralarea
