The Myocardial Performance Index (MPI) is a simple and accuratetool for quantitative assessment of left ventricular function. Our studywas held on 100 healthy Egyptian neonates (72 full term babies and28 preterm babies) to screen their indices. Mean MPI in full term andpreterm babies were 0.4± 0.14 and 0.36 ± 0.17 respectively. Nosignificant correlations were found between MPI and gestational age,post natal age, weight, heart rate or other echocardiographicparameters.
