Abstract

Introduction: Communities around the world have seen a rise in the incidence of childhood obesity and pediatric type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Family Physician (FP) occupies the unique role of serving as the first line of defense in the screening and prevention of its complications. Study: This is a retrospective study that included the review of 96 medical files of children attending a teaching hospital clinic; Diabetes Endocrinology Metabolism Pediatric Unit (DEMPU) during the period from January 2010 to December 2010 to assess prevalence of T2DM in children.Results: Five cases out of seventeen obese cases had elevated Fasting Plasma Glucose. Two presented with impaired glucose tolerance and three were diabetic.Through proper documentation primary prevention of T2DM is possible via control of risk factors, nutritional education, and healthful lifestyle.
