Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on the haemodynamic response to endotracheal intubation. It was found that the acupuncture policy is a safe and effective approach that allowed the use of lower doses of analgesics. Using acupuncture together with general anesthesia gives much better effect than using either of them individually. Acupuncture is appropriate for management of high risk patients who are planned for surgical intervention with general anesthesia as acupuncture will attenuate the haemodynamic response efficiently. The program as a whole is clearly beneficial and not flawed with unexpected negative effects. There were non significant differences between studied patients as regards the baseline haemodynamics. However, significant changes in the haemodynamics started to appear after using the acupuncture needles between the two groups which resulted in significant attenuation of the haemodynamic response in the acu group compared to the control group.
