Abstract

Anemia is one of the most common problems in obstetrics. It is well known that, anemia constitutes an important risk factor in both maternal and fetal morbidity. Maternal iron deficiency anemia (IDA) will carry the risk of premature birth, intrauterine growth restriction, unfavorable impact on placental development, and reduced neonatal iron stores. It is estimated that nearly half of the pregnant women in the world are anemic. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in developed countries averages 18% which is significantly lower than the (30 – 70%) in developing countries.Anemia in pregnancy is categorized into; Mild (Hemoglobin 9-11g/dL), Moderate (Hemoglobin 7-8.9g/dL), and Severe (Hemoglobin less than 7g/dL).
