Abstract

Ureteral stents have become an important part of contemporary urologic practice since 1978 when Finney and Hepperlen and colleagues first described the double-J stent and single-pigtail stent respectively. They allow good urinary drainage from the kidney to the bladder and maintain the caliber of the ureter during healing after injury or surgery. They are generally safe and well-tolerated. However, different symptoms and complications may occur with short- or long-term use of indwelling stents. These complications vary from minor side effects to major complications that affect the patients’ global health and quality of life.
