Abstract

LASIK was introduced in the 1990s with claimed advantages of providing less rehabilitation time, minimal postoperative discomfort, and avoiding potential postoperative complications such as the corneal haze associated with PRK. LASIK has remained the procedure of choice for the majority of refractive surgeons and patients, despite greater and recent interest in surface-based laser procedures. The greater degree of postoperative comfort and rapid visual restoration make LASIK the procedure of choice. The LASIK procedure consists of two key parts, corneal flap creation and laser ablation of the stromal bed.The evolution of many generations of MK has successfully overcome most of the complications related to the flap creation such as decentered flaps, free flaps, irregular flap edges, epithelial abrasions, buttonholes, and flap lacerations. However, the quest for the creation of a perfect flap is still ongoing.
