Different surgical approaches have their advantages and limitations. Each approach provides a surgical corridor that is more appropriate for particular lesions with particular characteristics. Characteristics that influence the type of approach that should be utilized include the malignant potential of the lesion, whether the lesion is intradural or extradural, and the size of the lesion. The blind spots, which are difficult to access from a transbasal approach, are located in the superolateral recesses of the maxillary sinuses and the most anterior portion of the nasal cavity which can be easily accessed from below by the transmaxillary and transnasal approaches. Also, this approach is limited laterally by the optic nerves, cavernous sinuses, carotid arteries, petrous apexes.
