Abstract

Health care associated infections (HAIs) are a significant public healthproblem till today. This study was done to Informing stakeholders of ElMansoura fever hospital (MFH) about the optimal nosocomial infections’prevention and control activities which are necessary for adopting strategiesto contain such infections.Quantitative as well as qualitative techniques were used to collect therequired data. Quantitative data was collected by a close ended precodedquestionnaire from all health care workers in MFH and focused observationalchecklist. Qualitative data was obtained from the director general of infectioncontrol department at Ministry of Health and Population, Governorate level,infection control committee director & infection control team at the hospital,unstructured observation and walk through the hospital, Review of thedocuments and the health information system of the hospital focus groupdiscussions with patients, companions and visitors .IC program has started since June 2006 and since that IC committee andteam were established. The program is suffering from low budget and highresistance from the stuff. All stuff members had unsatisfactory level ofknowledge and compliance of to IC practices. There is no referral systemadjusting the attendance of the patients to the hospital so there is largenumber of patients attending the outpatient. Patients, accompanies andvisitors had poor knowledge about hospital acquired infections.Infection control program in El Mansoura fever hospital has many strengthsand opportunities, but still has weakness and threats to be remedied.
