Abstract

Asbestos has been recognized in Egypt since a long time as ancientEgyptians were using it in mummification. Mesothelioma in Egypt ismainly attributed to environmental origin, although there may be manyother causes such as SV-40 infection and genetic predisposition (Gaafarand Ally Eldin, 2005). Also there is high frequency of SV40 in Egyptianpatients could be attributed to the polio vaccines that were prepared inEastern Europe and distributed in many countries including Egypt(Abderahman et al., 2007).The incidence of mesothelioma is rising in Egypt. Epidemiologicaldata for 584 malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) patients over thelast 10 years in the third Millennium were collected from the NationalCancer Institute (NCI) and Cairo University. This number is more thanfour times the number diagnosed in the previous 11 years at NCI(Gaafar, Aly Eldin, 2005).Whole Egypt is in a great danger and asbestos in Cairo is a silentkiller and measures toward eliminating it entirely or at least strictlycontrolling human contact with this dangerous carcinogen have to betaken in order to combat the coming epidemic of mesothelioma in Egypt.
