The advantages of local anaesthesia include: the absence of discomfort such as nausea and vomiting, superior postoperative pain control, the ability to maintain mental alertness and shorter postoperative recovery time. Several types of local anesthesia are available for ophthalmic surgery such as: retrobulbar, peribulbar and sub-Tenon’s anesthesia. Peribulbar block is the technique chosen by many clinicians who believe that it offers certain advantages over the retrobulbar injection and that it provides adequate anesthesia for almost all ophthalmologic surgeries. The complications associated with eye block techniques, though rare (approximately 1 in 500 blocks), generally occur within 15 minutes of injection and as a result of apprehension, pain, over sedation, local anesthetic toxicity, the method of needle placement and the method of injection of local anesthetic.
