Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on a group of dental health care workers (200 dentists and 50 nurses) working in the National Research Centre and the General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes. Their knowledge, attitude, and practice were assessed and the practice of a sub sample of 50 dentists and 10 nurses was observed, aiming to decrease the transmission of HBV, HCV, and HIV through dental clinics. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were calculated for both groups. Knowledge score was 45.9 ± 4.05 for dentists and 38.04 ± 8.2 for nurses (out of a total score of 52). Attitude score was 13.7 ± 0.4 (out of a total score of 14) for dentists and 10.5 ± 0.7 (out of a total score of 11) for nurses. Practice score was 24.7 ± 2.6 (out of a total score of 28) for dentists and 19.9 ± 2.4 (out of a total score of 22) for nurses. The study concluded that there was a gap between dentists' knowledge, attitude and their practice while nurses' knowledge and practice need improvement. Continuous education programs and training courses regarding infection-control are recommended for dental health care workers. More attention to the availability of critical supplies needed for infection-control in dental clinics is required.
