Acquired esotropia may be accommodative or non-accommodative. Esotropia not fully corrected with glasses necessitates surgery. Three methods have been proposed for determination of the surgical target angle: standard surgery formula, augmented surgery formula and prism adaptation. The former was associated with a high rate of undercorrections, leading to the evolution of the latter two methods. This study is conducted to compare the two methods of surgical augmentation, namely: the augmented surgical formula and prism adaptation. Patients undergoing preoperative prism adaptation were found at the end of the process to be either responders (fusers) or nonresponders (nonfusers) and to either or not show angle build-up.Success rates obtained were 95% and 80% for prism adaptation and augmented surgery formula respectively, emphasising the efficacy of the two methods in producing satisfactory ocular alignment.
