There has been a growing interest in the use of phakic IOLs forcorrection of high myopia. However, the procedure raises questions aboutthe long term potential risks to various intraocular structures; cornealendothelium, anterior uvea, angle of anterior chamber, iris, and lens. The purpose of this work is to assess the efficacy, stability, andsafety of anterior chamber phakic IOLs (phakic 6) with regard to variousintraocular structures, based on clinical evaluation, ultrasoundbiomicroscopic examination and endothelial cell studies.Anterior chamber phakic IOLs proved highly effective incorrection of high myopia. It provided the patients with excellent visualand refractive results. Stability was confirmed by UBM measurementswhich showed minimal, non significant changes in the IOL position withrespect to the central and peripheral corneal endothelium, the iris and theangle throughout the study. With regard to the corneal endothelium, longer term follow up studies are needed to confirm the safety of ACPIOLs on the long term.
