Morbid obesity is considered a major problem in the life of many people nowadays. It leads to many diseases and life-threatining complications. Many cases fail to loss weight by conservative methods. In this thesis, the anatomy of the stomach, the anatomy, histology and physiology of adipose tissue, the pathophysiology of obesity, the rationale for treatment of obesity and the current surgical options were reviewed. Obese patients were treated by laparoscopic gastric banding. The results showed that gastric banding is a safe, easy and effective method in treatment of most cases of morbid obesity. However, body contouring operations whether excisional e.g. abdominoplasty or non-excisional e.g. liposuction, may be needed later.
