Many different surgical techniques have been described for the treatment of patellofemoral instability, including proximal realignment, distal realignment and procedures where no alteration in the alignment of the extensor mechanism is contemplated. While there are recent advances in surgical treatment such as combined arthroscopic lateral retinacular release and miniopen, percutaneous or all-arthroscopic medial imbrication, repair of medial patellofemoral ligament or its reconstruction using quadriceps tendon graft, semitendenosus tendon graft or synthetic autograft or its reattachement using anchor sutures.
