Abstract

Objectives : To Clarify the role of zinc, copper, chromium, magnesium,Selenium and MDA in type II diabetes mellitus. Methods :50 patients with type II diabetes mellitus were enrolled in thisStudy, together with 15 healthy subjects, matched for age and sex, served as theControl group. Type II DM patients were classified into 2 group :Gooup I : 20 uncomplicated type II diabetic patients.Group II :30 complicated type II diabetic patients.Overnight fsting serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-c, LDL-c,HbAlc, MDA,zinc, copper, chromium, magnesium and selsnium were done to allPatients .Results: - There were high statistical significant differences between group I, Group II and the control group with zinc, magnesium, selenium and MDA. - FBS showed high significant negative correlations with zinc and selenium and significant positive correlation with copper .while HbA1c showed high significant negative correlations with zinc and selenium, significant positive correlations with copper and significant positive correlation with magnesium. - MDA showed high significant increase, while zinc, magnesium and selenium showed high significant decrease in both uncomplicated and complicated diabetic groups than the control group. - Magnesium showed high significant decrease in uncomplicated diabetic group than the complicated diabetic group. - MDA showed high significant positive correlations with copper and high significant negative correlations with zinc, magnesium and selenium. Conclusion: Trace elements and MDA could have a role as cofactors inThe pathogenesis and complications of type II DM. So, trace elementssupplementations and antioxidants might have utility the treatment of thiscomplex disorder.
