Abstract

Aim of the work: To assess the changes in semen parameters in spinal cord injured men.Patients & methods: Sixty patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) are included in the study. Semen samples were obtained using electroejaculation (EEJ) (60), penile vibratory stimulation (PVS) (17), vigorous prostatic massage (17) or masturbation (2) and then analyzed according to WHO 1999.Result(s): The main features of semen in SCI patients were normal volume (2.34ml +1.86) and sperm count (112millions/ml +122) with decreased motility (11.3% +9.1) and vitality (18.8% +15.7) and increased number of abnormal forms (83. 8% +8.7). EEJ showed successful semen retrieval rate in 100% of cases, while PVS was successful in 55.17% and prostatic massage was successful in 35.89% of cases. Conclusion(s): It can be concluded that EEJ is superior to PVS and prostatic massage as regards the successful retrieval rate and semen quality. The defining characteristic of the seminogram in SCI patients is normal volume and count with decreased sperm motility and vitality.
