Abstract

Interstitial cells of’ Cajal (ICC) are thought to play an important role in the control of gut motility. The regional and transmural distribution of ICC in the normal human coton as well as in some pathological conditions in human colon (Hirschsprung’s disease and gastrointestinal stromal tumors) was investigated by Using the routine histological stains and immunohistochemistry using C-kit antibody. The distribution of ICC was demonstrated in the colonic wall in; myenteric plexus, inner circular and outer longitudinal muscle layers. Quantitative morphometric study was performed using the image analyzer computer system verifying the histological finding by statistical analysis. The greatest distribution Of ICC was found in the myenteric plexus layer of the transverse colon which is consistent with the proposed role of ICC as pacemaker. This study will serve as a basis for future histopathological studies in the colon.
