The cornea represents part of the outermost coat of the eye, so it has a vital protective and refractive role. Therefore integrity of the cornea is so important for the proper function of the whole eye. In the past it was not possible to change the shape of the cornea. However, with the evolution of photorefractive procedures, it became possible to reshape the cornea based on mathematical estimations. There is little knowledge about the true shape of the cornea and its biomechanical properties. Still less is known about the internal ultrastructural properties of the cornea and of corneal wound healing. These factors impinge upon the decision-making and do affect the outcome of any refractive surgery. Thus precise knowledge of these factors is essential in modeling any mechanical system, including the cornea.
