Abstract

Objectives: to invetigate the value of computerized morphometryand DNA ploidy in colon adenoma and carcinoma. Aneuploidy hasbeen observed in 33% of lesion known to be precursor of colorectalcancer such as adenomas. It has been suggested that aneuploidy maypredispose to malignancy in tese cases.Study design: The study was performed on 35 cases classified as 15cases colon adenoma, and 20 cases colon carcinoma. Using LeicaQwin 500 image analysis system, nuclear area as a morphologicalvariable, as well as DNA ploidy, DNA index, and proliferationindices were measured for each case. Results: A significant difference in mean values of nuclear area wasfound between benign and malignant lesions, with no statisticaldifferences within the grades of each. Aneuploidy DNA index (DI)were significantly associated with malignancy and high gradedysplasia. Proliferation index (PI) was significantly higher inmalignant lesions, also can differentiate between different grades ofcarcinoma. Conclusion: Image analysis may become an important test in theintial evaluation of high grade dysplastic patients (adenomacarcinomasequence).
