Abstract

MDM2 can be used as a marker for the prognosis of several human cancers. In case of the oral squamous cell carcinoma, MDM2 expression can be used as a marker for the proliferation power of the tumor with its different histological grades. Methods: A total of 70 OSCC were evaluated with MDM2 using immunohistochemistry (IHC), the pathological grades were recorded and analyzed against the IHC findings. Results: MDM2 expression in all of the examined cases was extremely significant. The present study found more significant association between MDM2 expression in poorly differentiated than in moderate and well differentiated types respectively. Conclusions: MDM2 expression appears to be directly related to the aggressiveness of the tumor, as poorly differentiated OSCC, which is more aggressive than moderate and well differentiated OSCC, shows higher expression of MDM2.
