Abstract

Surgical extraction of wisdom tooth is one of the most common oral and maxillofacial surgical proceduresperformed and may have a number of associated complications. Preoperative assessment of wisdom teethand their relation to the surrounding structures serves as an essential part of the preoperative evaluation toreduce postoperative complications. This study was designed to compare digital radiography and CBCT inassessment of impacted wisdom teeth. Seventeen impactions in ten patients were assessed radiographicallyusing digital radiography and CBCT. Visual assessment was performed and different linear and angularmeasurements were taken from digital panoramic radiographic images and different CBCT reformattedimages. After the data collection, descriptive analysis was performed with SPSS, and presented in crosstabulation contingency tables. Results of this study revealed that the assessment findings were correlated inboth digital panoramic and CBCT regarding the number of roots, caries detection and vertical positioningof impacted teeth but digital radiography is of little value in assessment of root morphology, darkening ofthe impacted wisdom teeth roots and roots proximity to IAC and maxillary sinus. In conclusion CBCT issuperior to the digital panoramic radiography in the assessment of the number of impacted third molarroots, root morphology, the exact etiology of root darkening that seen on panoramic images as well as theassessment of wisdom tooth in the 3D which can’t be evaluated using digital panorama.
