Background: Many techniques are utilized for implant planning.Historically, standard radiographic imaging techniques (intra-oral andpanoramic) were available for investigation of potential implant sites.Nowadays three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) and cone beamCT (CBCT) systems allow a more reliable planning options. Three dimensionalimaging modalities gave rise to computerized surgicalguidance systems which enhanced the possibilities of successful surgicaland prosthetic outcome of implant placement.Aim of the study is to assess the accuracy of MSCT and CBCT in virtualimplant planning and fabrication of computerized surgical guide.Materials and methods: Ten bovine rib samples were sourced andprepared to receive 60 implants (6 implants each). MSCT and CBCTscans were taken for all samples. Virtual planning surgical guide designswere performed using Simplant software. Surgical guide was fabricatedusing a rapid prototyping technique (Stereolithography). Three implantswere placed via MSCT derived surgical guide and the other three wereplaced via CBCT derived surgical guide. Results: MSCT derived surgical guide showed higher accuracy regardingimplant placement than CBCT in both coronal and apical positioning, aswell as implant angulation.
