The aim of this study: to compare the healing potential of ginger(Zingiberofficinale) and garlic (Allium sativum) as separate systemic treatmentmodalities on induced labial ulcer in male albino rats.Materials and methods: One hundred and twenty adult male albino rats weighing 150-200 gm were used in this study.The animals were divided into 4 groups as follows:Group 1: (negative control) consisted of 30 healthy rats. Group 2: (positive control) consisted of 30 rats with induced labial ulcer left without treatment.Group 3: (Ginger group) consisted of 30 rats with induced labial ulcer treated with ginger extract in a dose equal to (200 mg/kg body weight once daily) given orally through gastric tube. Group 4: (Garlic group) consisted of 30 rats with induced labial ulcer treated with garlic in a dose equal to (500 mg/kg body weight once daily) given orally through gastric tube. Ten rats from each group were sacrificed at 3, 7, 14 days from the beginning of the treatment.Results: through the histological examination using Haematoxylin and Eosin stain, masson’s trichrome stain to investigate the newly formed collagen fibers, immuno-histochemical examination using CD31 antibody to detect the angiogenesis, image analysis and Statistical analysis for the immuno-histochemical stain. It was found that both ginger and garlic treated ulcerative wounds showed better healing progress revealed through decreased inflammation and faster collagen formation than in the negative control group ulcers.Conclusion: it was concluded that Ginger and garlic as systemic treatment modalities could improve the condition of the labial ulcers regarding its size, vasculature and collagen formation, but garlic was superior to ginger as a systemic treatment modality inlabial ulcers.
