Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the success of implants placed using a minimally invasive flapless surgery without antibiotic prophylaxis.Patients and methods: Ten dental implants were inserted in five healthy patients using a flapless approach aided by a surgical stent and without antibiotic prophylaxis (only a preoperative Chlorhexidine mouthwash). The surgical stent construction was a unique cost-effective method combining a workup on a cast model and cone-beam radiograph data. A follow-up of the patients was carried out to assess the implants on common parameters, and implant success was considered as the absence of any of the criteria of failure. Results: The results showed a favorable outcome with no implant failure, and the evaluated parameters were within the criteria of success. However, the average crestal bone loss (0.76mm after six months) was relatively higher than those reported in recent studies. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that implant installation using a flapless technique without antibiotic prophylaxis is a successful procedure provided that there is strict adherence to the criteria of patient selection and the surgical protocol. More long-term studies with a larger sample size are recommended to confirm these results.
