Abstract

Objectives/Patients after surgery and radiation for treatment of oral cancer often suffer from oral complications. These problems may be caused by surgery and radiation. Patients complain, for example, of speech problems and limited mouth opening (trismus). The aim of this study is a survey guided by questionnaire for the post treatment quality of life for oral cancer patients regarding complications of cancer therapy. Patients and Methods/ This study performed a survey using the University of Washington quality of life questionnaire (UW-QOL) aiming to identify different patterns of health-related quality of life of patients with oral cancer .192 patients treated with surgery and/or radiation for oral cancer were interviewed. Maximal interincisal mouth opening (MIO) was measured in these patients. Results/ Patients with tumors of posterior areas and patients with late stages showed statistically significantly higher prevalence of limited mouth opening. According to appearance Anterior tumors showed statistically significant higher mean score than posterior tumors and early stages tumors (T1and T2) showed statistically significant higher mean score in all domains. As regards MIO; patients with limited mouth opening showed statistically significant lower mean score in swallowing domain. The lowest score was found with chewing patients who received radiotherapy showed the statistically significant lowest mean score in this domain.Conclusions/ About half of the patients who underwent primary treatment for oral cancer developed trismus and reported about problems with eating and speech. Chewing was identified as the poorest rating domain and presented the highest proportion of complaints in the sample of this study.
