Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of tooth brushingtechniques on surface roughness of different cervical resin composite restorations.Materials and Methods: Two types of resin composites were selected representing twocategories of resin composites; Microhybrid resin composite (Filtek Z250,manufactured by 3M ESPE) and Nanofilled resin composites (manufactured by 3MESPE). Two types of toothbrushs were used, manual toothbrush. (soft and medium) andelectrical toothbrush.(soft and medium). A total 80 caries free permanent humanpremolars with class V cavity will be used . They will be classified according to typeof resin composite into two main groups , 40 teeth each . In the first groupmicrohybrid resin composite will be used, while in the second group nanofilledresin composite will be utilized. Each group will be subdivided into two equalsubgroups relative to type of toothbrush, 20 teeth each,i.e., manual and electricaltoothbrush respectively. Each subgroup relative to the hardness of toothbrush bristlesfurther subdivided into two classes, 10 teeth each. In the first class , soft toothbrushbristles will be used ,while in the second class medium toothbrush bristles will beutilized. Each class will be subdivided into two subclasses according to time of toothbrushing, i.e., 10, 20 minutes of tooth brushing, 5 teeth each. Another 5 teeth will beused as a control group for each type of resin composites. Surface roughness of theprepared specimens were determined by optical method using USB Digital microscope.Result: The highest mean Ra value was found with (Nanofilled composite x Manualtechnique x Medium bristles x 20 minutes)and (Nanofilled composite x Electricaltechnique x Soft bristles x 10 minutes) groups. On the other hand , the lowest mean Ravalue was found with (michrohybrid composite x Electric technique x Medium bristlesx 10 minutes) group. Conclusion: The surface roughness of nanofilled resin composite is affected by manualmore than electrical tooth brushing technique. The aggressive use of medium toothbrushes affects the texture of resin composites rather than soft one. Although, the use ofelectrical tooth brushes is recommended than manual tooth brushes for patients withmultiple cervical resin composite restorations.
