Abstract

Aim: evaluation of alveolar cleft reconstruction using tissue engineered constructs. Patients &methods: The current study was conducted on ten patients (five females and five males) admitted for unilateral maxillary alveolar cleft reconstruction. The ages of those patients ranged from 9-11 years with mean age of 10 years. Patients of group (A) (three males and two females) received autogenous AIC particulate bone graft while group (B) patients (two males and three females) received TE construct, composed of cultured BM-MSCs on collagen scaffold. Results: The mean volume of the newly formed bone in group A was 1010.6 mm3. The mean volume of the newly formed bone in group B was 1096.17 mm3. Comparison of the 2 groups as regards the volume of the newly formed bone at 6 months showed no statistical significant difference. Comparison of the 2 groups as regards the density of the newly formed bone at 6 months, showed statistically significant difference in favor of group A. conclusion: Cultured and osteogenically differentiated BM-MSCs/ collagen construct is sufficient for unilateral alveolar cleft reconstruction.
