Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the age related changes at the dental esthetic zone during rest and posed smile.Materials and Methods: A sample of 150 males and females with age range from 16 to 63 years was collected. All subjects showed no obvious dental or facial defects, normal antropsterior canine and molar relations, normal buccolingual inclinations and angulations of crowns with no spacing or rotations as possible.Three full facial photographs were taken for each subject of the sample one at rest, one with posed smile and the third with maximum smile. Subjects were categorized according to their age into five age groups each representing a decade of life. Each group consisted of 30 subjects. The collected data were statistically analyzed for descriptive as well as significance of difference among the different groups. Results: A significant increase in lip height occurs with age with a corresponding decrease in maxillary incisal and gingival display for both genders, maxillary incisal and gingival display were more apparent with younger age groups. Conclusion: Age related changes were proved to be evident in the dental esthetic zone. Differences between males and females were apparent in all age groups where females showed a greater dental and gingival display in all expressions.
