Abstract

The influence of Burstone's intrusive technique in correction of anterior deep overbite and gummy smile was investigated in fifteen adolescence female with class II division 1 malocclusion, with an age range of 18-25 years.Evident improvements in deep bite and smile were obvious after an average of two months of the insertion of the intrusive mechanics. Pre- and post-experimental records were taken including casts, photographs, lateral cephalometric, panoramic and periepical radiographs. Interpretation of the periepical radiographs were done to exclude apical root resorption. From these findings the following conclusions were drawn:1)Burstone's segmented intrusive arch was found to be effective in treatment of anterior deep bite.2)Incisor intrusion with slight labial flaring was clear.3)Significant incisor intrusion without extrusion in the buccal segments was observed in most subjects.4)No significant root resorption in the incisors or even in the posterior teeth was seen, however caution must be exercised in treating patients who may be "high risk" to root shortening or resorption by using lighter force and regular radiographic monitoring before, during and after intrusion.5)Significant changes in most of the antroposterior skeletal measurements which include increase of the SNA angle, decrease of the SNB angle, increase of the ANB angle and increase SN/PP angle.Slight backward rotation of the mandibular plane angle (SN/MP) was recorded as a result of bite opening.
