Abstract

Purpose: The present study was carried out to measure the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets using different types of enamel bleaching after two waiting periods and antioxidant application. Materials and Methods: A sample of seventy premolars was divided randomly into seven groups of ten specimens each. Sixty premolars were divided into six according to bleaching types (in-office or at-home). Twenty premolars of each bleaching type were bonded at two different times (1 week and 5 weeks) after bleaching. The remaining twenty premolars were bonded immediately after bleaching and antioxidant treatment. The seventh group included ten premolars which were bonded without bleaching and served as control group. After bonding of Roth edgewise stainless steel orthodontic brackets to the etched enamel surfaces all specimens were stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24 hours. Afterwards, bracket shear bond strengths were measured using a universal testing machine. Loading of the samples was performed by directing the force perpendicular to bracket base/composite interface at 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed to determine the shear bond strength of each group. Then, the modified ARI were scored by three different operators to minimize the degree of observation error using stereomicroscope. The collected data were then statistically analyzed for descriptive statistics using one way ANOVA test. Results: Regarding the results of shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets of this study revealed a significant increase of shear bond strength after 5 weeks with both types of bleaching. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between zoom in-office and at-home bleaching among all groups. Also there was no difference in the shear bond strength between the control group and after 1 week with at-home and in-office bleaching. A significant decrease of shear bracket bond strength was obtained after antioxidant treatment. However, the results of ARI in this study among the seven groups mainly indicated cohesive failures (score2-3). The higher ARI scores (score3) means that the mode of failure is closer to the enamel /adhesive interface.
