Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the periodontalconditions associated with placement of space maintainers and toevaluate the efficiency of different dental health education programs onthese periodontal tissuses in group of Egyptian children. Materials andMethods: Ninety children aged from six to nine years old were selectedaccording to their needs for space maintenance. Children were groupedinto three groups in accordance to the type of the space maintainer used(band and loop, crown and loop or lingual arch). Each group was equallydivided into three sub-groups according to the health education programto be followed after delivering the space maintainer (tooth brushing only, tooth brushing and chlorhexidine containing mouth wash or toothbrushing and fluoride containing mouth wash). The gingival and the oralhygiene condition associated with the different types of space maintainerswere evaluated after following the different types of oral hygieneprograms. Results: The results of the present study showed that crownand loop space maintainers recorded a statistically significant lowestmean GI 0.1 and 0.2 after 1 and 3 months respectively. Using a fluoridemouth rinse with band and loop space maintainers showed preservation tothe gingival condition from inflammation and significant decrease in theplaque index from 1.1 to 0.2. Chlorhexidine mouth rinse application withcrown and loop space maintainers showed significant decrease in both thegingival and plaque index from 1.2 to 0.4 and from 1.6 to 0.6respectively. Conclusions: The present study showed that band and loopspace maintainers are the most plaque retentive appliances than the othertypes used. Fluoride mouth wash program was the most effective forbetter gingival and plaque condition with the different types of spacemaintainers.
