Abstract

Aim: To investigate the oral health knowledge, diet quality and dental caries prevalence among visually impaired children, CAIRO, EYGPT.Materials and Methods: A total number of 86 visually impaired children were selected and examined from two centres for the visually impaired, namely, Al Noor Wel Amal Nursery for Blind Girls and Al Noor Wel Amal Blind School. Children aged between 3-15 years old, belonging to both sexes, were selected for the study. The levels of oral hygiene of the individuals were assessed using the simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S) by Green and Vermillion (1964). Caries experience was recorded using dmf, def and DMF indices for the primary, mixed and permanent dentition. Dietary intake data which give information about feeding history, eating behaviors and dietary habits. Results: The mean dmf index was 4.1(SD2.7), mean DMF index 2.2 (SD ± 2.1) and mean def index was 3.4 (SD± 2). The OHI-index was 1.8 with SD± 0.3. There was no statistically significant difference between mean OHI in subjects aged 6 – 12 years and > 12 years; both showed the statistically significantly highest mean OHI. Subjects aged 3 – 6 years showed the statistically significantly lowest mean OHI.Conclusion: Most of children exhibited fair to poor oral hygiene. There was an overall increase in the prevalence of dental caries among most of the children with a significant number of children having untreated carious teeth.Recommendations: Formulation and implementation of a complete plan of preventive procedures through community/school programmes. Promote training of personnel for dental care of the visually impaired children.
