Abstract

The objective of this study was to measure the estimated amount of fluoride ingested from the toothpaste by a group of 60 Egyptian children aged 4 – 6 years old during brushing their teeth and to evaluate the effect of the parent's assistance during brushing on the amount of fluoride ingested by these children. They were divided into 2 groups of 30 children, Group І brushing their teeth by themselves and Group ІІ having their teeth brushed by one of the parents, Then each group was subdivided into 2 subgroups of 15 children, Subgroup A with high caries index (dmft > 2) and Subgroup B with low caries index (dmft 2). The estimated amount of fluoride ingested by the child during brushing was calculated by subtracting the amount recovered from the initial amount of fluoride presented in the toothpaste used for brushing using the Ionic Chromatography device. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the amount of fluoride ingested in mgs between different study subgroups also the results showed that there was a statistically significant effect of the parent's assistance and supervision during brushing on the amount of fluoride ingested by the children in mgs.
